The BPERB uses specific terminology throughout its website and standards documents – one can use this glossary to check the meaning of words, names and phrases.

A process of peer review of a degree program against published learning outcomes. This usually involves a visit from a team of professional engineers nominated by professional engineering institutions to the degree awarding body.

An agreement in place between numbers of APEC countries for the purposes of recognizing substantial equivalence of professional competence in engineering. For more information visit the APEC website.

The ability to carry out a task to an effective standard.  Its achievement requires the right level of knowledge, understanding and skill, as well as a professional attitude. It is part of the requirement (along with commitment) that must be demonstrated in order for an individual to be admitted to the BPERB Register.

The systematic acquisition of knowledge and skills, and the development of personal qualities, to maintain and enhance professional competence. Graduate attributes form a set of individually assessable outcomes that are the components indicative of the graduate’s potential to acquire competence to practice at the appropriate level. The graduate attributes are exemplars of the attributes expected of graduates from an accredited program. Graduate attributes are clear, succinct statements of the expected capability, qualified if necessary by a range indication appropriate to the type of program.

The overall standard that a degree program, which comprises a level of qualification and a set of associated learning outcomes, must meet in order to secure accredited status.

The process by which an individual gains professional competence. It may take place through formal and informal learning, and workplace training and experience.

The process whereby an individual is admitted to the BPERB’s Register as a Professional Engineer based on the individual demonstrating, via a peer review process by a licensed professional engineering institution, that he/she has met the profession’s standards of commitment and competence. Award of the PEng title permits the use of the relevant post-nominal.

A peer assessment process to decide whether an individual has met the requirements for registration. It is a holistic assessment of the applicant’s competence and commitment against the relevant sections of UK-SPEC. For candidates seeking PEng registration, this will include a professional review interview (PRI).

Part of the professional review process undertaken by registrant peers who are trained and competent to do so. It is mandatory for PEng candidates.

An international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting and approving engineering education qualifications and programmes. The Sydney Accord recognises the substantial equivalence of programmes, accredited for the purpose of Engineering Technologist (Incorporated Engineer, IEng) registration, to the IEA Graduate Attributes. An international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programs, recognizing the substantial equivalence of such program to the IEA Graduate Attributes for entry to the practice of engineering.   1. An engineering degree recognized by the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
  2. Corporate membership of IEB.
  3. A minimum of 7 (seven) years professional experience must be required including a minimum 2 (two) years’ experience in a responsible position where s/he had to manage projects or parts of large projects/engineering activities independently, and having responsibility for the financial and technical outcome of work of an engineering nature.
  4. Evidence of achieving a level of 5 days/30 hours Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in the last 12 months of seeking PEng examination. The quality of CPD has to match with 5 Core Professional Competence Standards (CPCS) and IPEA Professional Engineer Competence (EC) Standard.

Professional Registration Process

Professional Registration Process

  1. Step 1. Sponsor’s/Referee’s Confidential Reports from 3 Fellows IEB with at least 10 years standing or PEng having 3 years standing.
  2. Step 2. Completed Application with CV and work experience
  3. Step 3. Competence and Commitment Report (within 3000-4000 words) on 5 core Professional Competence Standards with elements and indicators of attainment aligned with IPEA Professional Competency Profile.
  4. Step 4. Written Examinations in a controlled condition on (i) Code and Rules of Ethics; (ii) Communication and interpersonal skill assessed by the Assessors.
  5. Step 5. Oral interview by the Assessors.
  6. Step 6. Clearance of successful candidates from the Ethics Board of IEB
  7. Step 7. Approval of the BPERB Board for registration of successful candidates.

Normally it takes 3-4 months to complete the procedure of assessment done by 2 Assessors independently one after another. But the Written Examinations are normally held only when a handful of application forms are submitted. So that adds up more time to complete the procedure at times.

  1. Submit the filled-up prescribed form available at BPERB with drawings of five projects related to the type for which s/he seeks enrollment.
  2. Face an oral assessment by a Panel of Experts constituted for this purpose.
  3. Recommendations of successful candidates will be communicated to the IEB by BPERB to enroll and inform RAJUK.
